Learn German with Jenny was recommended to me by one of my students, who found her videos very useful for practicing a grammar point.
Jenny is German and also has a very good command of English. In her YouTube videos, she teaches German, which she describes as “one of the most beautiful languages on this planet. :)” I agree with her! – Ich stimme ihr zu!
Each video features Jenny on camera. She has a light-hearted, approachable manner and explains things well. When I first wrote this review in October 2016 she had 34,354 subscribers. In Sept 2017 she had 153,224. Impressive!
Topics covered include German language, grammar, vocabulary, useful words and phrases, culture, the German lifestyle and quirks.
Many of the videos are at elementary (A1) level. She speaks slowly and clearly with lots of repetition – Wiederholung – which is very useful for learners at this level.
I decided to take a look at a C1 level video. She spoke very quickly, at the speed of a native speaker conversing with a friend or family member. I had no difficulty in understanding her as she speaks a very clear Hochdeutsch – standard or High German. A transcript was provided.
Videos have subtitles – Untertitel – though I noticed some had not been fully edited. The sound quality could perhaps be better, but as with many YouTubers, the lack of slickness is part of the attraction.
I personally would prefer to see more images and videos of places taken out and about, rather than the presenter herself all the time, but that’s just my personal approach.
She has a website http://germanwithjenny.com which presents the videos and provides transcripts and exercises to download. The exercises have answer keys so you can mark your own work.
There is also a patron page which allows users to make a contribution – einen Beitrag – to help support what she does.
You can donate for instance one dollar per video and in return she will correct 100 words you have written in German (up to 1000 words per month). Pledge $2 and she will correct 200 words, and for $5 per video, she offers correction of 500 words, plus downloads of scripts and MP3s and MP4s.
Ich würde empfehlen – I would recommend taking a look at Learn German with Jenny. Judging from the number of subscribers, she must be doing something right!
Vielen Dank – Many thanks to CB for recommending her.
